Rev. Dr. Henry Lee Bates - Archived Messages

                             Francis J. Gable [Unity Minister] tells of an experience in his own life when he was a traveling salesman. It was one of those rare revelations of transcendent significance that came from following a flash of inner guidance. He was passing hurriedly through a train station bent on catching the 8:40 to Chicago, when he was confronted by a crippled beggar sitting with his pencils and cup. Following his charitable instinct he dropped a coin in the cup and hurried on past. Suddenly, a few steps farther on, he stopped short and pondered the significance of his act. He turned and addressed the man, saying, "I want to apologize to you. I treated you like a beggar, but you are really a merchant." At that, he stooped and took a pencil and then hurried on to catch his train.

                              It was a spontaneous thing, but with implications much more far-reaching than at the time he realized. He was traveling through that same station two years later. As he passed this same spot he heard a voice calling out, "Hey mister!" He turned and recognized this same crippled man, now seated on a high stool, working as the proprietor of a bustling newspaper stand. The man said, "You probably don't remember me, but I will never forget you. You treated me as a person, and for the first time in my life, I realized that I could make something of myself. I have now found a way to be self-supporting, but, most of all, I now have self-respect." In a moment Gable turned from love to loving, from charity to involvement — and a life was transformed." - Eric Butterworth, Life is for Loving

      The story above has implications for all of us.  It is a reminder to us to be "involved" in Life.  To be involved is to give more thought to what comes to us.  The man selling pencils came to Francis Gable in consciousness.  In consciousness he had a "lesson" for him.  A lesson that would touch his soul ... that is, touch something higher in him than mere charity.  And at the "soul level" ... Francis Gable was receptive to the lesson.  And I would imagine that this same type of occurrence happens for all of us.  But for many of us, we need to "slow down" ... and take the time to get "involved" in what we are doing.

     As we understand that all is consciousness ... we understand that we are always in control of our lives.  In the Bible the word "soul" is used instead of consciousness.  And we know that consciousness is where the Power of God works in our life ... this inherent "soul power" determines everything.  But, it is up to us to take "conscious control."  Knowing that we have the power within us to change our experience ... will not change our experiences.  We must consciously make contact with this "soul power" within ... and we must do it consistently and persistently.  "Be still and know that I am God" ... we find our power in the stillness ... but the stillness will elude us unless we consistently practice "being still."  And as we do, we will realize that this Power Greater than we are ... is at work within us ... and will work for us, as us, and through us ... to know and to do that which we give it definite direction to know and to do.

     As we remind ourselves of our Principle, All Is God and All Is Good ... we can know that there is Good for us in every situation we find ourselves in ... just like in the case of Francis Gable above.  But for too many of us, we give up our power by not taking control of the things that we experience.  This power within us can be used to control the conditions of our lives.  Will it make all things perfect according to our human understanding?  Not always.  But it will make all things Perfect on the "soul level" of our lives.  No matter what we may desire to heal, we can use this power to find the Good in everything; health, wealth, relationships, career. Some of my most challenging experiences have brought me the greatest benefits in my life ... why? ... because I did not let them stop me.  Do I still have "stuff" to heal in my life ... of course, and most of us do ... but we can choose to find the Good in these things ... or we can let them stop us.  We have the "Soul Power" to meet every challenge.  We just must be persistent in practicing what we already "know" ... about our relationship with God, Infinite Spirit.

     Today and everyday, let us meet God in the silence of our minds.  Let us get to know this Power that is within us and within all of life.  We can "Be Still" ... and "become" that which we choose to be, to do, or to have.  Let's see each day as a new day of "experiencing God" by using the Soul Power that we already have.  And as we do, we shall become more and more powerful in our expression of Life ... for that is the direction of our Soul's journey.
